Use your iPhone SIM card in your 3G iPad

Don’t want to shell out another 20-30 Euros per month on another data plan for your new 3G iPad? Read on…

You can simply chop the plastic off from around your existing iPhone SIM using this handy guide. This will turn it into a Micro-SIM (the format required for the 3G iPad). This way, with the aid of a Eur6 Micro-Sim adapter, you can easily switch the SIM from your iPhone into your 3G iPad whenever you need it.

The first time you insert it into the iPad, just use the same APN settings on your iPad as your iPhone and data should be ready to go!

Just make sure you don’t go over your monthly data usage limit. So far, I’ve successfully carried out the operation on an O2 Ireland SIM and a 3 Ireland SIM.

  • Nifty. Is there a way to clone a SIM so you can have the same “account” on two SIMs, one in the iPhone and one in the iPad?

  • I’m not sure. That would be perfect!

  • FYI: Cloning SIM cards is illegal. You can do it, but it is generally only done by law enforcement agencies!

  • Yeah I think I read somewhere that operators can easily detect if someone is doing this, so probably best avoided.

  • Personal Hotspot on iOS 4.3 has rendered this article obsolete! Happy days ;-)

  • A friend of mine got truly unlimited mobile internet for £10 a month by getting a micro sim for his iPhone 4 from http://www.giffgaff-sims.co.uk/smartphone.html
I’m using one in my Google Nexus tablet since I got that instead of an iPad for my Birthday.

  • Even if you did clone the SIM, I’m pretty sure that the network would not let you register twice. So you’d have to make sure only one of them is active at a time.
